Benjamin Edlavitch will be attending our meeting on March 1st and leading a discussion on patent law. His plan is to provide the basics of patent law according to the backgrounds of the participants at the discussion. Knowing some basics of patent law is essential for engineers, research scientists, entrepreneurs, physicians and others who are interested in bringing new products or services to market or protecting existing ones. Ben is a United States Patent Attorney concentrating in patent, trademark, and copyright law, licensing, IP litigation support, and domestic and international patent prosecution. He has over ten years of industry experience in intellectual property law and services clients in the fields of computer hardware and software, telecommunications, financial services, farm and construction equipment, medical devices, food processing, and industrial instrumentation and automation systems.
He holds an Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago (cum laude) and a Juris Doctor from IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law. He also has a degree in Biology from Washington University in St. Louis and professional certifications in Computer Information Systems from IBM, Sun Microsystems, and the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to law school, Ben worked for many years in the software industry as a developer.
