We live in an age of borderless communication and global mobility—but also of rising walls, mass deportations, and militarized enforcement. In the name of national security, countries are detaining families, deploying troops to cities, and bypassing legal protections. Meanwhile, others raise their voices for due process, human dignity, and international solidarity. The tension between protecting borders and protecting people has never felt so urgent.
Some argue that the safety of a nation must come first—even if that means rapid expulsions and harsh deterrents. Others insist that justice must be blind to nationality, and that human rights are non-negotiable, even in times of political pressure and crisis. What kind of society are we building when justice and security are framed as opposing forces?
We’ll gather in front of our screens, coffee or tea in hand, and connect with fellow human beings equally driven to make sense of the crossroads we find ourselves in.
Some questions we’ll explore:
- Are deportations a matter of justice or just a show of force?
- Should immigration policy be guided more by economic needs, or moral values?
- How much power should governments have to override legal protections in the name of national security?
- Why are immigration and crime so often conflated in public perception?
- What role does race, class, and media framing play in how we talk about deportation?
- Is it possible to have both secure borders and just treatment of migrants?
- And so much more!
By the end of this conversation, we’ll have shared experiences and insights across borders—on how immigration and deportation reflect our values, our fears, and our hopes for a just society.
