What drives us to see others not as neighbors, but as enemies? Across history and societies, humans have drawn lines between “us” and “them.” This instinct can bind communities together, yet it also fuels prejudice, polarization, and conflict. In today’s world, politics, media, and algorithms amplify these divisions, turning difference into hostility and mistrust.
When does disagreement become dehumanization? Who profits from our growing divides, and who pays the price? And what possibilities remain for building bridges across political, cultural, and personal fault lines?
We’ll gather, coffee or tea in hand, to share perspectives and challenge assumptions about why we fear and reject “the Other,” and what it would take to move beyond the politics of division.
Some subjects we’ll touch on:

  • The psychology of “othering”: fear, identity, and belonging
  • Media and echo chambers: how narratives shape enemies
  • Polarization as political strategy: who benefits?
  • Culture wars vs. material conflicts: values or resources?
  • Global vs. local divides: is this everywhere, or specific?
  • When we become “the Other”: personal experiences
  • Bridge-building: practices that might heal divides

By the end of our conversation, we will have explored whether polarization is an inevitable feature of human society—or whether new ways of seeing and connecting can help us resist the politics of division.
