Hanging Rock SP, 11-12mi Indian Creek & Hanging Rock Hike
Details
Let's visit Hanging Rock State Park and hike the Indian Creek and Hanging Rock Trails! These trails will pass along the Indian Creek and many of the waterfalls in the park, plus if the group wants to we'll climb up top and see the signature Hanging Rock.
The Indian Creek Trail is an out-and-back trail about 8.2mi long RT. There is a steep section on the front end, but the return is all down hill. Also, there are several creek crossings on stones, where you may get your feet wet if the water is high. Waterproof boots and hiking poles - at least 1 - recommended.
We will start at the Hanging Rock Dan River access and follow the Indian Creek Trail up to the Visitor's Center parking, where we will stop for lunch.
After our break, with group consensus, we'll head uphill to the Hanging Rock, then back down the Visitors Center, and have another short break before heading down the trail back to the river and our cars.
Total distance will be about 11-12 miles. The first trail is moderate and the second is a bit harder. We'll hike about 3mph where possible, slower on steep uphills.
The start time (9:30) is the time to meet at the Dan river access trailhead, we should be done with both hikes by 3:30-4pm.
NOTE: If time allows, I'll probably head over to the Green Heron (5 mins from Dan River access) for a relaxing beer before heading home.
