“Where do I even start?” Practical tools for getting started in large, front-end codebases

You’ve downloaded the codebase and followed the setup instructions. Then you take a look at the code... and it is MASSIVE compared to any code you have worked on. How are you possibly going to know where anything is in order to begin working?

Don’t panic!

April and David here. We’ve been there, we find ourselves there regularly, and we’re here to share the tricks and tips that help us get our bearings in big projects.

While it can feel overwhelming, developing this skill is so essential to make the jump to industry jobs or open-source projects.

In this talk, we’ll give a big picture view of modern technology stack architecture, and where front-end sits within it. With that orientation, we’ll give you some nitty-gritty, specific techniques for finding your bearings within specific features and files.

By the end of this talk, we hope you’ll be able to see a large, unfamiliar frontend codebase and know what to do when you don’t know where to start.

This talk is open to all skill levels, especially people still early on their coding journey! Expect to have fun, not take things too seriously, and learn lots!
