Sorry, had to reschedule!!

Join us for the third session of a book club inspired by the If Books Could Kill Podcast!

Be sure to check out the podcast if you haven't because that is the style of discussion we will have (generally negative while acknowledging the good, and from a leftist/progressive perspective)! This book is (I think) better than the ones they usually read, so we will probably be more positive than usual while still (of course) discussing the harm

We'll be discussing Jared Diamond's bestselling book Guns, Germs, and Steel at Board Room in Clarendon
Happy Hour/Introductions 2:00-2:30
Book Discussion 2:30-4:00

Guns, Germs, and Steel is a book that a ton of people love and is supposed to be a good read, but anthropologists criticize its overemphasis on geography, discounting of the role of human agency, and lack of reliable evidence.

Of course you'll best be able to participate if you read the book, but in the style of the podcast, you can also attend and learn/ask questions if you haven't read it. Want to be in the know but can't commit to nearly 500 pages? Some options:

  • Read a few chapters (Chapters 5, 11, and 20 are the source of a lot of criticism)
  • Watch the documentary (available for free on YouTube)
  • Explore the website
  • Listen to the abridged audiobook (available for free on YouTube or included in Audible Plus!)

Please do not buy a new copy of this book! Get the PDF or E-book from Internet Archive, borrow it from a friend, support a used bookstore, or get a copy from the library (Did you know you can get a ton of library cards if you live anywhere in the DMV? Info here!) If you need help finding a copy, please reach out!

Look for us at a table with a sign with the group logo on it!
