Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler is a 1993 dystopian novel set in a near-future California devastated by climate change, economic collapse, and social breakdown. It follows Lauren Olamina, a Black teenage girl with a rare empathic condition, who lives in a walled neighborhood and has been quietly developing her own belief system. When her sheltered life is upended, she must survive in a fractured world and test whether her ideas can hold up in it.
