What we’re about
You made it! This is a safe and encouraging environment for you to learn a new skill, a new art, and a new way of looking at the world. Welcome :)
We are Scratch Theater and the Scratch Impro School. Learn more here: www.scratchtheater.com
Improvisation is for everyone. Starting from when we're children, we just do it. We don't need to learn how. Then, many of us slowly lose some of this playfulness... But it's actually still there: We all do it, all day, all the time – just getting through a week is filled with improvisational moments! We want to help you use this dormant skill to create stories with others—embodying unique characters and wonderful worlds—and find a little bit of yourself in the process. By opening our minds, our hearts and our imaginations to each other, we can create memorable stories to keep for a lifetime.
Improv is sometimes associated with comedy, but we put absolutely no emphasis on being funny in our workshops. We made this decision a long time ago, since we have learned and know that all emotions are worth diving into: joy, sadness, anger, happiness, jealousy, worry, love, etc... The humour comes from characters and choices that are born in the moment. So don't worry about being funny, or being a comedian, or being clever... Really.
Regardless of your experience level or background, you'll enjoy the imagination and freedom that improvisational theatre brings to everyday life. We have workshops on all sorts of topics: Introductions, clowning, closeness, characters, silence/tension, believability and more! Improvisation has changed us and we want to introduce it to you, too.
Our co-organizers (Rob, Theresa and Colin) have plenty of years of performing on stages across the USA and Europe, teaching in many more countries, and creating new types of games, exercises and performances to push the boundaries of improvisation. We go beyond games by diving into emotional work.
In this safe environment we will celebrate failing, which will empower and navigate you to your true voice. So come and rediscover how to play like a child again. It's really, really fun.
Message us any time. We look forward to meeting you at an event!
See you soon,
Rob, Theresa and Colin
