Details
Join us at The Yarden for an evening of learning about, picking, and processing Chenopodium Album (also known as lambsquarters and white goosefoot). You will be able to take some leaves home ready to cook or dry for future use.
This amazing plant has edible greens that are delicious and highly nutritious. You can dry the leaves and use them as a salt substitute because of their very high mineral content.
It also has been used traditionally by indigenous people for medicine in dozens of ways, including:
- Digestive Issues: Used to treat stomachaches, diarrhea, flatulence, and intestinal worms.
- Anti-inflammatory: Applied as poultices for bug bites, sunburns, skin irritations, and rheumatic joints. A decoction (a concentrated liquid made by heating) mixed with alcohol was rubbed on the body to ease pain from arthritis and rheumatism.
- Diuretic: A mild diuretic, traditionally used for kidney health and detoxification.
- Antiscorbutic: Eaten to prevent scurvy, a deficiency of vitamin C.
- Blood purification: Traditionally believed to purify the blood.
- Used for ailments like coughs, liver disorders, spleen enlargement, and to support overall vitality. The seeds were chewed to treat urinary problems.
