Welcome to the Indianapolis Philosophy Discussion Group! You do not need to have any formal experience with philosophy to join in on our discussions and we are inclusive of all education levels.

The goal of our discussions is to take philosophical questions or concepts and work through them together as a group. A philosophical question requires complex thinking rather than empirical research to answer. Philosophical questions pertain to ontology, epistemology, ethics, social and political theory, and aesthetics, and can be observed throughout the sciences, history, politics, art (classical, literature, music, film, video games), or in our day to day lives.

The members that are the most interesting to converse with are those who, while they have their own biases, put them aside during the conversation, they are not adamant about their beliefs, and they like to work through analytical problems with others in a cooperative fashion.

What separates our group from others is that we strive for diversity of beliefs and we focus on small conversational groups, usually groups of three. Fostering an environment of diverse beliefs allows us to ensure we thoroughly explore all avenues of a philosophical problem and splitting into small groups allows everyone the opportunity to actively participate in the conversation.

If you would like a primer in how to think philosophically this Harvard Philosophy lecture series on justice is a great start!
