DIDComm and OpenID VC Protocols: Demonstrations and Discussion

Details
DIDComm provides fast, secure, mutually authenticated communication between any two parties, whether they be individuals or organizations.
OpenID Connect simplifies the way to verify the identity of users based on the authentication performed by an Authorization Server and obtains user profile information in an interoperable and REST-like manner. OpenID4VCI and OpenID4VP extend these protocols to allow for the issuance and presentation of Verifiable Credentials.
Recently some great work has been done by IDunion to bring these two technologies together to offer developers and users the benefits of both OpenID4VC and DIDComm, a demonstration of which was offered at the recent IIW.
In case you weren't able to attend the sessions, leaders in the community Sam Curren, Steve McCown, Artur Philipp, and Colton Wolkins will be joining us to share demonstrations of the technology in action — one being how to get started with DIDComm, and the other being how OpenID and DIDComm work together — as well as discuss the functionality they can add to existing applications, where we are now, and what the next steps are.
The interoperability of technologies has become a focus of many developers as more countries and large organizations look to implement decentralized identity. eIDAS in particular has become a guiding principle for those looking to build and have their solutions gain widespread traction across Europe. Part of the conversation will be dedicated to best practices when building with these technologies and how to maintain interoperability.
Join the discussion to learn
- What features DIDComm and OpenID VC Protocols provide and how your organization can benefit.
- How DIDComm and OpenID can work together, including a live demonstration with a look at some of the underlying technologies and how it can be used to communicate.
- How your organization can get started today and what features you can look forward to on the roadmap.
Speakers:
Sam Curren, Deputy CTO, Indicio
Sam Curren is the Senior Systems Architect and Deputy Chief Technology Officer for Indicio. Sam is highly involved in multiple open-source organizations and working groups, including a working group co-chair position in both the DIF and Hyperledger Aries. Sam oversees the direction of Indicio’s open source contributions and guides architecture of multiple customer projects and was heavily involved in the creation of Indicio’s flagship product Proven™ which provides the complete suite of software, network infrastructure, and decentralized identity components needed to authenticate and exchange high-value information and develop trusted, secure relationships.
Colton Wolkins, Senior Software Engineer, Indicio
Colton Wolkins is a senior software engineer for Indicio and co-chair of the DIDComm users group. Colton created the first iteration of an interactive DIDComm demo, wrote the Quickstart library, making sending messages through DIDComm faster and easier, and contributed heavily to the Indicio Proven Cloud Scale Mediator, enabling more affordable, larger scaling projects for decentralized identity. In his free time Colton is passionate about learning japanese, extra class amateur radio, and contributing back to the open-source community.
Artur Philipp, Senior Consultant Digital Identities, SVA System Vertrieb Alexander GmbH (Germany)
Artur Philipp is a Senior Consultant for Digital Identities at SVA System Vertrieb Alexander GmbH. With a focus on Self Sovereign Identity (SSI) over the past five years, he ha gathered experience with Decentralized Identifiers, Verifiable Credentials, and credential exchange protocols in various projects in Germany. His involvement began with pioneering projects with Hyperledger Indy, AnonCreds, and Aries Cloud Agent Python, including contribution to the implementation of an SSI pilot for hotel check-in systems. Artur has also contributed to the Hyperledger AnonCreds Specification 1.0 and has been actively involved in the IDunion project, a major research initiative funded by Germany’s Ministry of Economics and Climate Affairs. He currently leads the IDunion working group "OpenIDIDComm" focusing on the integration of OpenID 4 Verifiable Credential Issuance and DIDComm.
