MY BIG FAT GREEK POTLUCK

Details
IF YOU CAN'T MAKE THE FILM BUT WISH TO COME AFTER, THAT IS FINE. JUST STATE SO IN THE RSVP COMMENTS. I WILL INCREASE THE RSVP CAPACITY IF NEEDED. - RYAN
On Saturday April 25th we will be hosting 'My Big Fat Greek Potluck' and of course screening the film MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING at Ryan's place. The fun begins at 6pm, we will screen the film at 7pm allowing for lots of time to enjoy fine company afterwards! If you can't make the film do join us for the fun after, at about 9:30.
Everyone please bring food/drink to share. Bonus points if you come up with Greek food or drink to bring! Our resident Greek, Golfo has made some suggestions of Greek food and drink and where to find them.
Golfo writes... As for finger-type foods, I would suggest:
-Pita bread
-Feta cheese
-Kalamata olives
-Tzatziki (a yogurt-cucumber type dip)
-Meatballs
-Saganaki (flaming cheese)
-Spinach pies
-Cheese pies
-Baklava, and other Greek cookies, for desserts
As for drinks:
-Greek coffee ("Bravo" is the brand, it's a strong espresso)
-Frappe coffee ("Nescafe" is the brand; an iced Greek coffee)
-Ouzo, and Metaxa are the popular "hard" liquors. As for beer, there is Mythos, which is a Greek brand. I'm not exactly sure where this can be purchased, unfortunately.
The only Greek food store that I know of is the "Hellenic Grocery," which is in Livonia (7 mile and
Farmington). I think that Trader Joe's has a good selection of some of these items - spinach/cheese pies, for sure, and I think some of the others. I think grocery stores, maybe Whole Foods and others, has feta cheese and olives. Maybe there are other ethnic-type stores in Ann Arbor that others know of. People can feel free to get creative!
IT IS NOT A REQUIREMENT THAT YOU BRING GREEK FOOD, JUST SOMETHING TO CONTRIBUTE. HOWEVER IT WOULD BE NICE IF WE COULD GET SOME GREEK ITEMS TO KEEP UP WITH THE THEME AND HAVE SOMETHING DIFFERENT TO EXPERIENCE!
We have hosted this sort of event in the past and it has always been a blast! This would also be a great opportunity for new members and those who have not joined us in some time to come out and enjoy a more casual atmosphere. I have plenty of space and a nice upstairs deck, should the weather be in our favor!
- Ryan
Parking is on street and should be readily available. Enter through the back of the house (front door is for downstairs apartment only) walk up the stairs, ours is unit #2. Please keep your rsvp up to date.
THE FILM: My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Toula Portokalos is 30, Greek, and works in her family's restaurant, Dancing Zorba's, in Chicago. All her father Gus wants is for her to get married to a nice Greek boy. But Toula is looking for more in life. Her mother convinces Gus to let her take some computer classes at college (making him think it's his idea). With those classes under her belt, she then takes over her aunt's travel agency (again making her father think it's his idea). She meets Ian Miller, a high school English teacher, WASP, and dreamboat she had made a fool of herself over at the restaurant; they date secretly for a while before her family finds out. Her father is livid over her dating a non-Greek. He has to learn to accept Ian; Ian has to learn to accept Toula's huge family, and Toula has to learn to accept herself.
