Industry Inner Join v20 - $1 Sprint

Can you make your first dollar in two hours?

That's the challenge at the v20 edition of Industry Inner Join in collaboration with Civic Hackers and supported by Endava.

There's no watching from the sidelines for this one, this is a doing event! You'll form or join a team, pick a problem in data, AI, software or analytics, and try to get from idea to your first dollar before the clock runs out. You can also do this one solo.

At its heart, this is a crash course in rapid development: how to take an idea, design it properly and have something working in 2 hours.

Whether or not you land the sale, you'll walk away with something: a prototype, a pitch, a working idea, built end to end under real time pressure.

Something that's also a genuine portfolio piece, something worth naming in your next interview or performance review.

At the last Civic Hackers event, one team pulled it off in 10 minutes.

What to Expect

The Sprint | 5:00pm to 7:30pm

Two hours to go from idea ➡️ income. Special guest and facilitator, Tim Sondalini, will kick things off at with a walk through the product lifecycle and the design process. We'll open with a quick intro and scoping session, then walk through a lean startup and business model canvas process with prototyping tools to help you test your idea fast. Some teams will be ready to run within minutes. If that's you, go. If you need more structure, we'll work through it with you step by step. Tim will be on hand throughout the sprint to coach teams on prototyping.

The Rules

• Bring your laptop. This isn't an observation event, you'll be actively building for the two hours.
• Come solo or as a pre-formed team, either works.
• For this event: you're allowed to sell to each other. Normally that's off limits, but for v20 we want the networking and knowledge sharing that comes with it.
• Teams that run off early get a scoping sheet with key milestones and a 7pm return time, so nobody gets lost chasing their first dollar (yes, it's happened before).

Even without a sale, the value is in what you build, the feedback you get and the push to actually try.

🤝 Tim Sondalini: Tim is Data and Development Manager at Perth Airport and the person behind Civic Hackers, which runs challenge-based hackathons that teach rapid prototyping, entrepreneurial skills and creative problem-solving. Through Civic Hackers, Tim is on a mission to build a culture of experimentation, giving people hands-on practice in the skills the future of work demands: collaboration, creativity and solving problems under pressure.
