“Chase the Bluebells — A Secret Spring Hike Hiding in Plain Sight”
If you time it right, a late-April walk at Flowing Well Park feels less like Indiana… and more like stepping into a glowing woodland carpeted in color.
Route: Easy 1.3-mile loop
Start at the artesian well
Follow the wooded trail along Cool Creek
Cross the small bridges
Loop back through the densest wildflower sections
⏱️ Time: ~30–60 minutes (but you’ll want longer for photos)
Terrain: Flat, dirt trail, very beginner-friendly
What Will Be Blooming (Peak Spring Ephemerals)
Late April is prime time here — one of the best wildflower windows of the year.
Flowers you’re likely to see:
Virginia bluebells (the star of the show)
Yellow trout lily
Bloodroot
Great waterleaf
Spring beauties (likely nearby)
Phlox (possible depending on temps)
These species are classic spring ephemerals, meaning they bloom briefly before the forest canopy fills in
Expect entire sections of the forest floor to be covered — especially near the creek.
Pawpaws (Don’t Miss This)
Keep an eye out for pawpaw trees along the trail.
They grow naturally in Indiana woodlands
In late April, they produce small maroon/purple flowers (subtle but cool to spot)
Later in the year, they’ll produce North America’s largest native fruit
Flowing Well Park specifically notes pawpaw flowers among its spring plants
Pro tip: Look under the trees — the flowers hang downward and are easy to miss.
