A Casual Film Discussion: Oppenheimer
Details
Calling all movie, film, philosophy, science, history, and Christopher Nolan nerds*: come join us for a fun, rich discussion on the latest Nolan film.
*used with endearment :P
Oppenheimer is touted as the best film of the century. Agree or disagree? Did you walk away with a boiling level of awe or think it was overhyped? Were there scenes in the film that stood out to you in any positive or negative way? Did you see it a while ago and have residual feelings and thoughts you need to get out of your system? 🤣 Come share/rant with us!
Overview of agenda:
-
Meet & greet - I'll introduce myself, cover the rules and stuff, and then give everyone a chance to introduce themselves. We'll all get to know each other a bit and break the ice.
-
Hang & chat - we'll dive into the meat of the event and go from there. We can keep it as serious and philosophical or as light and silly as everyone wants it to be. The only rule here is to be respectful.
-
Wind down - share any remaining thoughts we have, folks can exchange info if that's relevant, etc.
Some questions to ponder:
-
What is ethics? What is morality? Are they the same or different to you?
-
Was it worth the cost to create the atomic bomb? Are we (as a nation, as a world) better off having developed it or are we better off without it ever existing?
-
How would history have changed and life today be if the atomic bomb was never created?
If you haven't seen Oppenheimer, be sure to check it out.
For those who don't know about this film, here's the synopsis from the internet:
"During World War II, Lt. Gen. Leslie Groves Jr. appoints physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer to work on the top-secret Manhattan Project. Oppenheimer and a team of scientists spend years developing and designing the atomic bomb. Their work comes to fruition on July 16, 1945, as they witness the world's first nuclear explosion, forever changing the course of history."
Will the event be strictly a discussion on this film?
