Hierarchy

Is hierarchy an inherently negative structure, regardless of the group or scale of the group (large or small)? Is it negative on the basis of being capitalistic? Is there a such thing as fairness within hierarchy? Any or all of these type of questions are political yes, but might possibly also be thought of through philosophy and/or music.
