Friday's Hackathon Details (Still time to register.)

From: Verious Smith I.
Sent on: Wednesday, April 19, 2017 4:11 PM

Howdy there WordPress Fanatics!  Verious here.

As you well know, this Friday will be the 1st WordPress Hackathon held in collaboration with the City of Corona, The North Village Group & The Inland Empire Meetup.  Before, the day comes I want to give a bit of pertinent information to those who plan on coming but have not fully secured their spot.

1) Still Time to Register - If you have not registered but would like to you can do that by RSVPing here: then completing step number two below.  If you have registered but have some questions please feel free to ask questions of myself or any of the guys at The North Village Group (their email: [address removed])

2) Complete your Registration - If you have RSVP'd on the meetup group but have not completed the actual team or individual registration form. Do this immediately here:

3) Get To Brainstorming - This email is has also been sent to notify you of the theme of the night and how projects will be judged.  Read more below.

Hackathon Theme & Judging Criteria

Your mission for the night, should you choose to accept it will be for you to:

1) Pick a charity from a predefined list that will be given when you arrive.

2) Create a WordPress Website or Plugin that you think would be suitable for the charity.  We are giving you lots of autonomy for your decision making.

3) Demonstrate the functionality of the "hacked" project (Website or Plugin) at the end of the event to be judged for a prize.  Having a local install of WordPress is going to be your friend here.

Judging Criteria

Each contestant will have 3-5 minutes to present their demo to the audience and judges, followed by 5-10 minutes of Q & A session. Contestants are expected to clearly present their idea and why it would be useful in the real world, as if they were presenting to potential investors.

1. Originality (20%)

  • Uniqueness and creativity of your idea.
  • How is the demo relevant to a real market or business problem?

2. Execution (40%)

  • How functional is your product?
  • Ability to solve an existing problem
  • Does the demo actually work?
  • Execution of idea

3. Skill (40%)

  • How technically impressive is the product?
  • Is the overall user experience intuitive?
  • Does the flow make sense?
  • How difficult is the problem you’re addressing?
  • Overall theme development and design.

HINT: Remember this is a "Hackathon" and we will be looking more at the skill & functionality than looks (though looks still add to the bottom line).

The Reward

The winning team will be receiving an Award, Notoriety & Lifetime bragging rights.  More specifics will be given to you on the night of the Hackathon.

See You There!

We hope you can make it to the WordPress Hackathon and bring friends. Even if you can only make it for the first half to watch and support friends, please come!

See you soon!
