# Service in Today’s World: Where Does Selflessness Begin?
## A Guru Poornima Satsang Reflection on the Subtle Art of Selfless Service
It is often said that one of the simplest and most beautiful paths to inner peace and self-realization is service.
Acts of kindness surround us every day: caring for our family, supporting our community, healing the sick, teaching the young, volunteering our time, offering comfort, or contributing to those in need. Each of these is a meaningful expression of humanity.
And yet, the spiritual path invites us to ask a deeper question:
What transforms service into a path to higher consciousness?
We often hear the phrase selfless service. But what does it really mean?
If a teacher shapes young minds, a doctor cares for patients, a caregiver looks after loved ones, or someone serves society through their profession — is that not service? If we donate to charities, support noble causes, or help others without expecting material reward — is that not selfless?
Every act of service creates goodness. It benefits others, softens the heart, and refines the one who serves.
Yet the great spiritual masters invite us to look deeper.
The question is not only whether we serve. The question is: what silently accompanies our service?
Do we seek appreciation, recognition, gratitude, security, good karma, divine blessings, a better future, or even spiritual progress? These expectations may be subtle, but they often live quietly within the heart.
Selfless service is not merely the absence of worldly reward. It is the gradual dissolving of even the finest expectations hidden within us.
Parents may lovingly serve their children, yet quietly hope they will be cared for in old age. A donor may give generously, yet inwardly hope for divine protection. Another may not seek money, praise, or position, but may still hope their actions will bring spiritual merit or a better destiny.
These expectations are natural. They are not faults to be judged. They are opportunities to be understood.
The journey of selfless service is not about becoming perfect overnight. It is about cultivating the awareness to recognize these subtle attachments and gently release them. As our understanding deepens, service transforms from something we do into something we become — an effortless expression of love, compassion, humility, and surrender.
This Guru Poornima, let us sit together in the presence of Transcendental Energy and pray for true discernment — not to judge the actions of others, but to understand our own hearts more deeply.
May we be blessed with the wisdom to recognize the hidden motives behind our actions, the courage to release them, and the grace to serve with increasing purity, love, and surrender.
Perhaps the highest service is not merely serving the world, but allowing service to transform the one who serves.

## About Guru Poornima
Guru Poornima is Guru’s Day.
Just as many cultures honor Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, India has long carried the sacred tradition of honoring the Guru — the light of wisdom that guides us from confusion to clarity, from ego to humility, and from restlessness to inner peace.
It is a day of gratitude, reflection, surrender, and renewal.
On this occasion, we come together not only to express reverence, but to deepen our understanding of how spiritual wisdom can be lived in everyday life.
