Study of Chapter 14:

## The Forces of Evolution - The Three Guna: Verses 5 - 10

## Discussion Themes:

  • THREE FORCES: Indian Philosophy describes how three intertwined fundamental forces shape all of existence, both in the material world and in consciousness. They are the gunas (qualities): Sattva (goodness, harmony, balance), Rajas (passion, activity, change), and Tamas (inertia, darkness, ignorance). They constantly interact and influence one another. They define, enable, and restrict who we are and how our lives unfold. Our challenge is to transcend them..
  • ALERTNESS WILL COME: 'The predominance of one guna over the other two occurs under certain situations. These are the states through which we pass every day. A little knowledge of this may help us to improve ourselves without going to ask help from a psychologist or a psychiatrist. Very often we can help ourselves by knowing the situation we are in. ‘Yes, that enemy has come and I must be careful.’ That alertness will come to the human being and he or she can become one’s own master in developing character.’

We're a multicultural group of varying ages, including our Vedanta Society members and friends. We always welcome new faces and hear new perspectives.
