Book Club Theme: Refining the Ego

‘Once refined, it can be a powerful tool in our hands. That is the underlying belief behind this attempt at refining the ego.’

From the book Vedanta in Practice – Spiritual Unfoldment, lectures of Pravrajika Ajayaprana.

## Discussion Themes:

  • CONFRONT THE EGO: ‘Two ways to confront the ego … either expand it to infinite proportions or contract it to such a degree that it disappears,’ such is the challenging advice of the 8th-century sage, Sankaracharya.
  • ESCAPING THE NET OF ILLUSION: We’re caught in an entrancing net of Maya (illusion), a cosmic play of light and shadows; of laughs and tears; of hope and fears. But some escape Maya’s wiles and snares.
  • IMMERSED IN THE SOUL: There are mystics whose sense of self sometimes expands to embrace the whole of creation. Such inspired moods arose in Swami Vivekananda when confronted with the dramatic beauty of nature.
  • CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE : Our ego is not big enough or small enough to escape Maya's net. We’re entangled in desires. But if we know that, if we remember that, then we’re on the path to untangled freedom.

Pravrajika Ajayaprana, the late Vice-President of Sri Sarada Math and Ramakrishna Sarada Mission established the first foreign Centre of Sri Sarada Math in Sydney in 1982, returning to India in 2011.
In her lectures and writings, she drew on her vast knowledge, extensive reading, and life experiences to relate ancient Vedantic teachings to everyday life.

We look forward to exploring articles by our founding president, Rev Pravrajika Ajayaprana Mataji, and articles by other notable figures in the Vedanta movement.

Join our Vedanta Society members in exploring the deeper side of life.

The format will include a PowerPoint Presentation with slide-by-slide segments of the article, a discussion led by Pravrajika Sridharaprana.
