👉 Tech & Tea Point #5: Technology strives to solve, but rarely solves anything fundamentally. Human nature still takes its course...
This meetup is meant to be a gentle, reflective space—no pressure nor performance is necessary.
In case you have been wondering where I've been, I've been working more than usual. I have also been vibe coding, and it took me a long while till I arrived at the conclusion stated above. How did I arrive to that conclusion? Well look around you. Some people just always arrive fashionably late- nothing can change that. Not even with the invention of bicycles, cars, public transportation, uber, or the electronic wheel can fix that. Underneath this problem lies a more deeper psychological issue- this person probably has problem with time management, or thinks his time is more valuable than others. The baseline is they are less willing to change their behavior. Technology reinforced this kind of behavior, and it gets worse over time. That's what I discovered when I was trying to make a Morse code highlighter printer. I was running from the pain of not being able to read my notes and being sloppy with my work that I thought tech would solve it. Instead, it burnt me out, without even including OLED and micro printer. Was it really worth all that trouble so you can print something due to your inability to accept imperfection? And I still didn't want to change my sloppy handwriting! What gives?
And then I was asked to teach 3rd Graders about IT. That's when horror shook me. In the age of AI, if being more knowledgeable and skilled no longer served as a barrier for ordinary people to make things, how can I acknowledge myself as their teacher? When the admin told me my lesson plan covered what the kids knew already, I was in panic mode. What did these school admins have in mind when they decided that first graders should have access to computers? I have literally made myself obsolete. There's also a ton of stuff about AI that makes us restless... it doesn't look too reassuring...
I'm not here to make you panic, I just think there are 3 things we should bear in mind:
1) We should try to always start out making technology with some core values and policies, setting limits to resources we use;
2) Technology only expands our options till we run out of them due to poor behavior;
3) There should be some way to monitor our usage, because our resources are not infinite.
I'm not anti-AI, I just think we should use technology responsibly. It shouldn't be about marketing and reaping a profit. Somewhere underneath all this tech, we could solve our problems in a less tech-savvy way and it would still be brilliant and progressive.
That being said...
