Don Bies joined Lucasfilm in 1987 as their official R2-D2 operator and archivist. In 1997, he began work on The Phantom Menace as a model maker, co-creating the new See-Threepio puppet. He supervised the construction of an improved R2-D2 and worked as one of four operators used throughout the filming. Don was the supervisor and lead operator of the Droid Unit for Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, and supervised the construction of numerous models for the prequels at ILM.
