Philosophy Nights ! (Theme: Culture Night)

Details
Dear Friends of the Philosophy Meetup!
It's with great joy that we announce another Philosophy Night! We continue to be humbled by the people who tell us that their Saturdays just aren't the same without their weekly dose of philosophy and community.
To that end, we are currently partnering with Maison de l'Afrique in Rosemont (a few mins away from Beaubien station).
Meetup fee 12.00$
Fees maintain our operations and black coffee, tea and some snacks are included.
Theme: Culture
Topics:
- Woke
- What does it mean to be ‘woke’? At one point it meant being awake to social injustice — but today, the word feels like it can mean almost anything, from a compliment to an insult. Has the term lost all meaning, or does it still point to something important? - Gender
- Lately, people talk a great deal about a so-called ‘gender war.’ Suggestive of a conflict between men and women, traditional and progressive, sexuality and identity, and so on. Why do you think this language of ‘war’ gets used? Do you think it reflects reality, that this conflict is 0-sum, that collaboration and nuance are impossible, or is this more a cultural framing motivated by something else? - Memes
- We often think of memes and entertainment as just fun or silly, but they also shape the way we think, talk, and even argue about serious topics. Can a joke really influence beliefs or social norms?
For those not familiar with the format, here is how the night will work:
Topics don't need to be strictly philosophical, they can be social, political or historical, anything that the group decides is worth discussing.
- Maison de l'Afrique then closes but we often continue into the night at a local pub/eatery.
So come by to see old friends, make new ones and have stimulating discussions with amazing open-minded people from all walks of life!
