Philosophy Nights ! (Theme: Governance)
Details
Dear Friends of the Philosophy Meetup!
It's with great joy that we announce another Philosophy Night! We continue to be humbled by the people who tell us that their Saturdays just aren't the same without their weekly dose of philosophy and community.
To that end, we are currently partnering with Maison de l'Afrique in Rosemont (a few mins away from Beaubien station).
Meetup fee 12.00$
Fees maintain our operations and black coffee, tea and some snacks are included.
Theme: Governance
Topics:
-
Mastery vs Freedom - We so often speak of governing nations, but what of governing ourselves? Does true freedom mean doing what we want, or mastering what we want? From ancient Stoicism to modern psychology, we’ll explore how self-control, desire, and autonomy shape our inner democracy.
-
Virtue vs Power - Whether in politics, leadership, or daily life, power tests integrity. Can we govern well without moral strength? And can virtue survive the compromises of real authority? We’ll explore how private ethics shape public power and where they diverge.
-
Who Should Rule? - From our inner impulses to our political leaders, governance always raises the same question: who deserves authority? Should wisdom, virtue, or the majority decide? We’ll trace how personal mastery and moral legitimacy echo in the structure of society itself.
For those not familiar with the format, here is how the night will work:
Topics don't need to be strictly philosophical, they can be social, political or historical, anything that the group decides is worth discussing.
- Maison de l'Afrique then closes but we often continue into the night at a local pub/eatery.
So come by to see old friends, make new ones and have stimulating discussions with amazing open-minded people from all walks of life!
