Philosophy Nights ! (Theme: Violence and Power)

Details
Dear Friends of the Philosophy Meetup!
It's with great joy that we announce another Philosophy Night! We continue to be humbled by the people who tell us that their Saturdays just aren't the same without their weekly dose of philosophy and community.
To that end, we are currently partnering with Maison de l'Afrique in Rosemont (a few mins away from Beaubien station).
Meetup fee 10.00$
Fees maintain our operations and black coffee, tea and some snacks are included.
Theme: Violence and Power
Topics:
1. Manufacturing Consent - A discussion on the idea from the eponymous book by Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky. We can discuss the 5 filters of mass media in the real world or fiction and how they apply to us and what we can or should do about it.

2. Is it more powerful to control life or to control death? An exploration of the concepts of Michel Foucault's Biopower and Achille Mbembe's Necropower as a means to understand how those with power wield it to control populations.
For those not familiar with the format, here is how the night will work:
Topics don't need to be strictly philosophical, they can be social, political or historical, anything that the group decides is worth discussing.
- Maison de l'Afrique then closes but we often continue into the night at a local pub/eatery.
So come by to see old friends, make new ones and have stimulating discussions with amazing open-minded people from all walks of life!
