Feminism has four waves in United States. With each wave, different agendas were achieved.

  • The first wave began from 1848 - 1920 -> focused on suffrage and legal rights such as The right to vote.
  • The Second wave 1963 - 1980s -> fought for broader social and legal equality such as equal pay & reproductive rights.
  • The Third wave 1990s - 2010s -> emphasized individualism and diversity such as class, gender, sexual orientation.
  • The Fourth wave: Present Day -> digital activism, using social media to address sexual harassment, violence against women, and online misogyny such as MeToo movement.

***I argue that while feminism in the first 2 waves created massive improvements for women in the United States, the last 2 waves has dangerous repercussions towards the nuclear family. When women fought for individualism and getting rid of the traditional gender roles by teaching each other that "we are and should be strong & independent women!" | "Women don't need men!" | "Down with the patriarchy!" This makes women less likely to marry men and have children. This is a huge issue because the family unit is one of the most fundamental pillars of all human societies***

Note: There's a difference between kinship structures throughout history and the post industrial revolution model of nuclear family.
(A nuclear family is a social unit consisting of two parents and their biological or adopted children, living in the same household.)

It is also important to note that women in poorer countries tend to stay married while women in first world nations with money tend to divorce more often.

Questions to Ponder:

  • What is the first thing that comes to mind with the word "feminism"?
  • Is modern feminism conducive to the nuclear family?
  • What is a strong and independent woman?
  • What's the correlation between economics and feminism?
  • Is the gender pay gap still present? (Which fields)
  • Are fathers important in children raising?
  • Is the patriarchy oppressive by nature?
  • How is feminism viewed in different countries?
  • Is feminism an inevitable part of developed nations? (How's feminism doing in 3rd world nations?)
  • Are gender roles necessary in modern societies?
  • How each wave of feminism changed women's role and perception of women in society?
  • Has the media portrayed women in sexually objectifying ways?
  • Should men and husbands have a say in the abortion issue?
  • Is toxic masculinity real?
  • Is there such thing as toxic femininity?

Guidelines:

  • Hand raises are required.
  • There will be a 3 minute timer for every person. However, in this group, I do allow a brief back and fourth interjection from others if it's something that's related to the person who was just speaking. This is a way to prevent the group from feeling too "robotic" in style and get your pressing question asked to the speaker and get the answer right away without waiting all the way back to your turn again.
  • Be authentic & civil!
  • Please refrain from using Ad Hominem (personal) attacks. Instead, please attack the points from others. Severe Ad Hominem such as racist behavior will result in being removed from the meeting.
  • Zoom link is posted well before the day of the meeting but I will only start letting people in up until 15 minutes before the meeting.
