Should We Judge Others?
Details
"You don't get to judge me!"
"Who are we to judge?"
"You have no idea what that person is going through so don't judge them."
Judgment can be a controversial subject due to the intense nature it can arise.
However, we must face the facts that judgments exists regardless if you like them or not. So tonight, let's discuss whether you support the judgment of others or not.
Sometimes we have to stand firm and say "Who are we not to judge?"
People who thinks judgment is necessary: These people tend to think that judgment is what keeps societies in check and to make sure other people are not too out of line with their moralities and behaviors.
People that believe judgment is bad: They tend to believe that judgment of others, especially the ones we know nothing about, is wrong. They tend to argue that having more empathy is key and not judgment.
Questions to ponder:
- Does judgment require an objective set of principles of right and wrong?
- How should we approach people with differing set of morals?
- What is the role of shame in society?
- When is judgment good and necessary?
- When is judgment bad and harmful?
- Should we judge ourselves before judging others?
- How religions view judgment?
- Is it wrong to judge from a standpoint of unknown?
- What's the role of power dynamic in judgment?
- Can you think of a time you judged someone else and how did you feel about it afterwards?
- How should we balance judgment and empathy?
Guidelines:
- Hand raises are required.
- There will be a 3 minute timer for every person. However, in this group, I do allow a brief back and fourth interjection from others if it's something that's related to the person who was just speaking. This is a way to prevent the group from feeling too "robotic" in style and get your pressing question asked to the speaker and get the answer right away without waiting all the way back to your turn again.
- Be authentic & civil!
- Please refrain from using Ad Hominem (personal) attacks. Instead, please attack the points from others. Severe Ad Hominem such as racist behavior will result in being removed from the meeting.
- Zoom link is posted well before the day of the meeting but you will not be able to join until 10 minutes before the meeting start time.
