Singalong Movie Screening of "Cabaret" (1972)
Details
What good is sitting all alone in your room?
Come, hear the music play.
The movie is "Cabaret", new chums.
Come to see "Cabaret"!
Described as a musical movie for people who normally hate musicals, director Bob Fosse and screenwriter Jay Presson Allen adapted the 1966 Kander & Ebb stage show (based on the 1939 novel "Goodbye to Berlin" by Christopher Isherwood) for the more cynical and less family-friendly '70s. The movie is still fun and funny, bold and moving, innovative and mesmerising. It's also depressingly apt: set in Berlin in 1930, English writer Brian Roberts (Michael York) develops a complicated relationship with his neighbour, American nightclub singer Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli). They love each other, but one of them is upset by the growing acceptance of Fascism in Germany, while the other lives in a fantasy world.
So, whether it's your first time seeing this film or you've lost count, you don't remember the lyrics or you can scream-sing the whole song book, it's time for a holiday! Let's meet up and sit together (as much as possible), so you won't feel as awkward as I did on my own, belting at the Bytowne's sing-along "Les Misérables" last month.
CABARET-INSPIRED COSPLAY IS ENCOURAGED - THERE WILL BE A COSTUME CONTEST! But if you're too shy for that (or it's just too cold), dress however you want! And no pressure to sing, though the lyrics will be on screen. This event is hosted as a fundraiser by and for the LGBTQ+ Ottawa choir Tone Cluster. To buy tickets for $25, click the link below for the Bytowne Cinema's event page. The theatre's membership cards won't provide a discount for this special screening.
N.B.: I am not affiliated with the choir or the Bytowne; they're not paying me to advertise, and I don't represent their views on anything. This is just for fun, and I'm happy to support repertory cinemas (and choirs). Be excellent to each other: everyone should feel safe and welcome. Feel free to bring friends, because this free organizer account I'm trying out only allows ten official guests per event.
