Writing Poetry (4): Poet's Self vs Lyrical Self

Whether you're an experienced poet or writing your very first poem, you're welcome to the 4th poetry meeting of the InterArts Workshop.

The speaker of a poem does not have to be the poet. Yet, poets often project themselves directly into their poems, making it difficult to adopt a voice that differs from their own personality, perspective, or current emotional state.

One way to gain greater freedom of voice is to distinguish the poet's self from the lyrical self: the identity constructed by the poet as the speaker of a particular poem. The lyrical self can possess different personalities, perspectives, emotions, and ways of speaking, allowing the poet to write beyond the limits of their own immediate experience.

In this session, we will explore how to separate the poet from the speaker and construct different lyrical selves, then practice writing through voices that differ from our own.

The emphasis is on experimentation rather than perfection. This is a supportive workshop where everyone is encouraged to try ideas, share their work, and learn from one another.
