Feminist Book Club - Norwich - May
Details
In the month of May we’re tearing up the sensationalist myths and turning our attention to the real lives so often overshadowed by violence.
We’re reading:
The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper by Hallie Rubenhold
A book that drags the spotlight away from the infamous murderer and back onto the women whose stories deserve better than lurid headlines and Victorian moralising.
Rubenhold dismantles the tired narrative that these women were “just” victims or footnotes in someone else’s brutality. Instead, she gives us Polly, Annie, Elizabeth, Catherine, and Mary Jane as full human beings shaped by poverty, class, misogyny, and the unforgiving structures of their time. It’s history told with care, rage, and a refusal to accept the dehumanising status quo.
If you’re up for a read that challenges the myths we inherit, interrogates the politics of whose lives get remembered, and restores dignity to those written out of the record, then join us. Bring your solidarity, your sharpest questions, and a willingness to rethink the stories we think we know.
