Feminist Book Club - Norwich - August
Details
Get ready to crack open a literature classic but not to sip tea and gush about courtship rituals.
We’ll be reading:
Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen
An author who understood, long before the term existed, that patriarchy is an economic system as much as a social one. Austen hands us the Dashwood sisters, Elinor, with her self-discipline and, Marianne, with her fiery emotional honesty. Austen shows us how women are pushed into impossible choices by inheritance laws designed to keep wealth in the hands of men.
Reading this through a feminist lens means seeing Austen not as a dainty writer of love stories, but as a razor-sharp critic of gendered power structures. Her wit bites, her politics simmer, and her characters navigate a world where agency is rationed out like charity.
We'll unpack the humour, the heartbreak, and the quiet rebellion woven through the novel.
