'Berlin is more a part of the world than a city'
Jean Paul (1800)Calling writers of all stripes (prose writers / memoirists / poets / playwrights / screenwriters / travel journalists & more): I invite you to a weekend of writing inspired by the city of Berlin. Perhaps more than any other, Berlin is a Kaleidoscopic capital, and this is your opportunity to capture it through your own lens and in your own style.
On Saturday morning we will gather and spend three hours connecting, workshopping ideas and dwelling on the work of other exemplary writers who have drawn their inspiration from Grey City. On Saturday afternoon / evening you will go out alone, or in pairs, to your chosen part(s) of the city to observe, absorb, reflect and write. On Sunday evening, we will gather again for drinks / snacks and an informal group share of work created.
Where: The space is hosted by New Pages, a comfortable literary event space and home to Von Morgen Verlag, a publisher of fantasy novels. The space is a short walk from Gesundbrunnen Bahnhof.
Who is this for? Writers of all levels. Perhaps you're motivated to connect with writers, the city, or you need that extra kick up the bottom and a deadline to get you started.
Who: I am an experienced workshop leader and writer, with publications (critical and creative) across a range of genres (poetry / prose / scriptwriting / academic / journalistic) and publications (Guardian, BBC, Literary Review, Bloomsbury. Aesthetica). I am the winner of a National Academy of Writing Award and I have a PhD in creative writing pedagogy.

FAQ
English isn't my first language. Can I write in another language?
Of course. All communication (including the workshops) will be held in English, but you may feel more comfortable writing in your native language. At the sharing session you may choose to read it in the original language, or in translation. DeepL offers a good translation tool, but of course it won't capture the nuances of a well-shaped piece of writing. What we will write?
That's entirely up to you! It could be a poem, short story, microfiction, or an excerpt from a play. The section you read will be in the region of 500 words - probably fewer if you're writing poetry. I will, of course, be providing prompts & ideas in the workshops. Can I continue to work on something I've already started?
Ideally, no. I want this weekend to be one in which you start afresh, possibly by taking an approach that lies outside your comfort zone. This is a weekend for exploration & experimentation. This is not to say you can't already have had a few ideas and jotted down a few notes prior to arrival! Can you give me feedback on my work in progress over the weekend?
It's unlikely I will have the time to give to the sensitive process of developmental editing, though I can be available for general questions and guidance. I work as an editor and personal tutor, so these are options you may wish to consider if you'd like to continue working with me on your piece.I've never done any writing before - is this workshop for me?
This weekend is probably more suited to those who have a little bit of writing experience and are able to work - for the most part - autonomously, and don't need to be guided through the whole process. However, if you're feeling bold, why not take the plunge? It's possible you may find a writing partner or accountability buddy in the Pitch and Ditch session.
