This January, journey into the world of Takeshi Kitano with our two-part screening series, The Duality of Takeshi Kitano. Featuring Brother and Kikujiro, this program reveals the striking duality in Kitano's work: unflinching violence and heartfelt warmth.

Takeshi Kitano, an internationally renowned Japanese filmmaker, is a master of contrasts. His films blend minimalist visuals and sharp dialogue to explore deep emotions and complex social themes. Kitano’s unique artistry allows him to be both a painter of violence and a poet of tenderness.

Part One: Brother
Brother showcases Kitano’s signature style, merging raw violence with cultural tension. This gripping tale follows an exiled yakuza as he rises—and falls—in Los Angeles. With its stark visuals, visceral action, and poignant storytelling, Brother delivers an unforgettable experience, balancing brutal intensity with quiet reflection.

After the screening, join us for a discussion to explore Kitano’s storytelling, his portrayal of violence, and the artistry that defines his films. Whether you’re a devoted fan or new to his work, this is your chance to immerse yourself in the world of one of Japan’s most iconic filmmakers.
