Megnot (Two Hearts), Ethiopia, 2025

The African Film Festival is coming to Auckland and it has some not-to-be missed films. The Festival is a unique opportunity to see deeper into life in Africa (in this case, Ethiopia). At the same time, we see something of ourselves in the lives of people in a very different setting.

Megnot (Two Hearts) is beautifully filmed and follows the a young woman caught between tradition and modernity. Her granddad arranges a marriage for her. She rejects that and sets out on her own journey. and meets someone on his own journey and a relationship blossoms. This is great personal love story, which remains grounded in Ethiopian heritage and culture, and yet charts new ways for African young people to crerate their own identities and futures,
