The Movie vs The Book: Annihilation

Details

Welcome to Interrobang?! Book Club’s 'The Movie vs The Book' Summer Series!
We will be viewing three movies that have been adapted from books in a variety of genres. While these are well-known films from different periods of time, many folks have not had a the chance to read (or even know about) the books they are based on. Each meeting, we'll be watching them as a group and then talking about both film and book afterwards. Come for either part!

Location specifics:
The viewing will be on the second floor meeting room of the Cupertino Library,
The discussion portion at the Coffee Society cafe, at the corner of the library closest to Torre Ave.

Schedule:
June 15, 2025 - In the Heat of the Night (1967) and 'In the Heat of the Night by John Ball

July 6, 2025 - Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988) and 'Who Censored Roger Rabbit?' by Gary K. Wolk

August 24, 2025 - Annihilation (2018) and 'Annihilation' by Jeff VanderMeer

Annihilation (2018)
Lena, a biologist and former soldier, joins a mission to uncover what happened to her husband inside Area X -- a sinister and mysterious phenomenon that is expanding across the American coastline. Once inside, the expedition discovers a world of mutated landscapes and creatures, as dangerous as it is beautiful, that threatens both their lives and their sanity.

General overview of a meeting:
The first part of the meeting will be where we watch the movie, so everyone can see it, even if they haven't before. Once we are finished watching, we will move downstairs to the cafe in the library for the second part, for the discussion portion.
Typically we'll start with an icebreaker question and a chance for each person to introduce themselves. We then move to rating the film and the book with a thumbs up/down/sideways. We spend most of the meeting discussing the both versions, including strong opinions, questioning why whatever changes were made happened, personal reactions to the story and characters, and wondering how it could have been improved. You don't need to finish reading the whole book to come to the meeting! However, if you haven't finished it, please be OK with hearing spoilers.
