What we’re about

We meet weekday afternoons at coffee shops, in parks, and at pubs (rarely) to talk about interesting things: books, arts, social movements, current events. We meet in small groups for pleasant, respectful discussion. There are no limits on age, race, gender - join up if you're interested in meeting people for meaningful conversation.

In this group, we meet people who might be a little different and discover people who are passionate and clever. You will enjoy this if you enjoy small groups to talk about a great book you read, an interesting place in the Bay Area, or creativity.

Topics are sometimes fixed (see the history) and might involve an essay or some thinking. Other times it's free form discussion.

You probably won't be comfortable if you think Biden stole the election, if you feel the need to check your phone repeatedly, if you are unvaccinated because you fear the microchip, or if you love talking about office and job politics. (Unless your job is politics!)

We value when people ask questions of others.

We try to be device-free.

Many Meetup users sign up for this group, but few participate. Mostly, a group of regulars float in and out. You can expect to see people a few times.

Meetups are in Alameda, Oakland, or Berkeley, outdoors when weather allows. A flexible day schedule is helpful since we generally meet on weekdays.

There is a strong emphasis on being reliable. If you RSVP that you are attending and you don't show up, chances are good that you will be removed from the group. It only takes a second to update your RSVP, and people are often on the wait list. Introverts might like to know whom to expect.
