Smart home products are increasingly becoming popular, providing a wide range of lifestyle, security, entertainment, and health services. Services such as security have real-time and low latency requirements for alerting or acting upon a condition. Lifestyle products such as thermostats need to be able to "learn" habits to autonomously adjust settings. As each device generates data, there is also a need for secure data storage and privacy. Each home will typically have an assortment of such devices from different vendors, each bringing its own proprietary set of "in-home" services, user interfaces, lifecycle management, architecture, and interoperability challenges.

The Linux Foundation's LF Edge HomeEdge project is an intelligent home edge computing open-source framework and ecosystem that supports various devices at home. To accelerate the deployment of the edge computing services ecosystem successfully, the Home Edge Project provides users with an interoperable, flexible, and scalable edge computing services platform with a set of APIs that can also run with libraries and runtimes. All the devices (TVs, fridges, washing machines, etc.) connected to a Home Edge Network are considered Home Edge devices and support distributed applications across the home devices.

We will be hosting Dr. Peter Moonki Hong, Staff Engineer, Samsung and Suresh LC, Chief Engineer, Samsung, who are also members of the Home Edge project's Technical Steering Committee. They will be speaking about the background to the Home Edge Project, targeted use cases, and how you can get involved.
