In this meetup, we will continue our exploration of IoT technologies. In our fourth meetup we take a look at 6LoWPAN, a technology first standardized in 2007 (https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc4944) by the IETF (https://www.ietf.org/). It was developed to work with battery-powered devices and it has fault-tolerant routing with mesh networking as prominent features. Following our usual format, we'll start with an introduction to the technology, followed by a demo.
Agenda
18:30 - Welcome and registration
19:00 - Welcome by the relayr team
19:05 - 19:30 - “A gentle introduction to 6LoWPAN” by Antonio Almeida
6LoWPAN enables objects and things to communicate with services and devices over existing IP-based networks. This increases the number of applications and use cases for the Internet of Things by allowing any type of device to connect to the internet, communicate with others through mesh networking, and run for years on low battery power. This is a gentle introduction to a topic that holds a lot of promise. The idea is to get you interested and help you understand the basics. This particular rabbit hole is deep - very deep.
19:35 - 20:00 - “6LoWPAN in the wild: a simple demo” by Christos Zachiotis
In this short demo, we will create a small network of sensing devices which will help us monitor the ambient conditions of the building. The motes used are ultra low power devices from Zolertia (https://www.ietf.org/)- more specifically, we use the boards with the zoul (http://zolertia.io/product/hardware/zoul-module) module. The devices follow the IEEE 802.15.4 standard and are also capable of running the IPv6 stack using 6LoWPAN. We'll connect them to Internet sending data to the cloud.
20:00 - 21:00 - Food, Beverages & Networking
