Forget the big state-driven IoT initiatives, here comes the global DIY movement. Open source hardware like Arduino (http://www.arduino.cc/), BeagleBone (http://beagleboard.org/bone) and Gadgeteer (http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/projects/gadgeteer/) lets you build Internet-connected projects today, based on existing standards and simple data formats.

We’ll look at those platforms and the beautifully crafted connected objects that emerged, aided by laser cutting and 3D printing. Not to forget commercial success, a defining factor of innovation, which can now be achieved without prior investment through crowd-funding platforms like Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/).

@tamberg (https://twitter.com/tamberg), co-organizer of IoT ZH, founder of Yaler (https://yaler.net/) and big fan of the DIY movement, will present a collection of favorite projects and try to do a short demo of the #OktoberfestOfThings (http://oktoberfestofthings.tumblr.com/) prototype.

Cuno Pfister, CEO of Oberon microsystems (http://www.oberon.ch/) and member of the .NET Micro Framework (http://www.netmf.com/) core team, will present Mountaineer (http://www.mountaineer-boards.com/), his new open source IoT hardware modules based on the Gadgeteer standard.

Marco Brini (http://www.linkedin.com/pub/marco-brini/8/144/227), serial entrepreneur, founder and CEO of the Lugano based environmental sensing company EnvEve (http://www.enveve.com/), will talk about his mission to build a modular system to make "IoT as easy as Lego".
