Happy New Year everybody!
To kick off 2019 in the best possible fashion we are excited to annouce that we have Nic 'The Geek' Burkinshaw of Thinnovation Ltd to tell us all about the amazing work he is doing with low power wide area networking (LPWAN).
As you know doubt are aware "last mile connectivity" to IoT devices, whether in the home, in the field, or in the factory, has long been a difficult and expensive problem to for embedded engineers to solve.
Happily there are a number of new options available to us, one of which is the LoRa, a radio protocol used by "The Things Network", a secure and collaborative IoT network that spans across many countries around the globe.
Some Background -
Nic Burkinshaw, AKA ‘Nic The Geek’ has been involved in IT for more than 40 years.
From working with paper-tape, TTL and UARTs, via 8-bit assembler and embedded linux to Software as a Service (SaaS) and the Internet of Things (IoT), he has maintained an insatiable thirst for knowledge and the need to take the back off any new piece of technology he can lay his hands on.
IoT needs open-source, license-free, low-power networking that works over miles, not metres. Move your communications beyond WiFi, Bluetooth and cellular. Understand more about the RF technology on which LoRaWAN is based. Take a look at 2 homebrew and 1 commercial gateway and at least 6 different nodes.
The success of any LoRaWAN deployment depends on link budget (more about that in the talk) and antennae as a key feature will be explained.
Breakout Session - We're also planning to have a breakout session after Nic's spoken for discussion and sharing of our experiences with LPWAN...
Live Streaming -
We will be live-streaming and recording this event as a part of our commitment to @MakeSpaceLive - connecting #Innovators and #Makers with an Open Video Streaming platform. Please let us know if you don't want to appear on the streams!
Beer 'n' Pizza -
If THAT isn’t enough to entice you, there will even be time for some FREE beers, pizza and networking! We look forward to seeing you there!
(We do pay for the beer and pizza out of our own pockets so there will be a "pay as you feel" box which you are welcome to contribute a fiver to should you wish to help us cover costs!)
*** Spaces are limited so please RSVP quickly to ensure attendance! ***
MCQN Ltd (http://mcqn.com) and Dynamic Devices Ltd (http://www.dynamicdevices.co.uk) are sponsoring the pizza and refreshments from 6:30pm, with the event starting at 7(ish)
6:30 - 7:00: Networking & Nibbles
7:00 - 9:00: Nic Burkinshaw Low-power wireless networking that works over miles, not metres!
Followed by group discussion on the challenges we face with LPWAN.
9:00 - 9:30: Mingling until the beer runs out!
