PRESENTATIONS

Firstly an international representative from the IoT Security Foundation, Sarb Sembhi.

The Role of Trust: Citizen Happiness in Smart Cities

Direct from London, Sarb will be presenting 'Buying Secure', including a preview of a new procurement guide from the IoTSF's Smart Built Environment working group. Including experience and insights from his background in smart built environments (smart homes, smart buildings and smart cities).

About Sarb Sembhi

Sarb is a CTO speaking, writing and contributing to many events and publications. He was shortlisted in the CSO30 2021 Awards, and inducted into the CSO Hall of Fame for his contributions to the industry.

He is a board member of the IoT Security Foundation. Together with Paul Simms and Peter Olivier, he co-founded the Mental Health in Cyber Security Foundation, which he now Chair. He also mentors cyber security start-ups, advise on market entry, and serve as a board advisor to several companies.

Sarb also serves on the IoTSF Executive Steering Board (ESB) and established and co-chairs the Smart Built Envoronment Working Group 'SBE-WG' The group has a charter to ‘establish a set of guidance materials and tools to help each of the building system(s) stakeholder groups to understand, specify, procure, install/integrate, validate, operate and maintain IoT systems securely in buildings throughout the working life.’

Secondly a practical presentation by Michael Lindsay of Blueside (blueside.com.au) followed by informal networking with peers.

Device Lockdown: Baseline Security for IoT Products

With attacks on IoT escalating in recent years, governments worldwide have turned their attention to device security by enacting laws and introducing cybersecurity labelling schemes aimed at combatting the malicious actors targeting our devices.

Product developers now undoubtably feel the pressure to improve their security practices while managing feature development and more than likely, tight timelines. Recognising the challenge, this session introduces the IoTSF Security Assurance Framework (SAF) as a guide to classifying and securing IoT devices and presents an implementation of controls, including the use of a cloud-based IoT management platform.

This session explores the IoT SAF security classifications, technical controls, and describes how the framework can be used to establish a robust security baseline for connected devices. Using a practical demo project that leverages Azure's IoT service, we'll discuss what Azure can address out of the box, identify remaining gaps, and outline what is needed to meet more stringent compliance requirements.

About Michael Lindsey

Michael is a cybersecurity consultant specialising in securing products and the enterprise. With close to 20 years experience in IT, Michael is an experienced security assessor, penetration tester and has expert knowledge in security architecture and software delivery.A passionate advocate for cybersecurity, Michael shares his knowledge through workshops, conference talks and active participation in CTF events and bug bounty programs.

These presentations would be ideal for product managers, engineers, architects, and IoT enthusiasts who want to understand the practical overlap between security requirements, IoT security frameworks and development with modern cloud platforms.
