Learn to use Open Litter Map

Details
Join us on Saturday, May 17, to learn how to use Open Litter Map, a citizen science initiative to track the quantity and type of litter in our neighborhoods!
How does it work?
- Take a photo
- Tag with the type of litter
- Upload to the site
It’s easy! But we’ll help you get started, from creating your account to tagging your first items. Whether you pick up that one can of Busch Light that magically reappears on your dog-walking route every week, or you do a full cleanup of a roadside—your data is important! You can tag and upload as much or as little as you want. It all makes a difference!
Iowa City Litter Crew has used the data collected so far to create a dashboard and maps to help visualize problem areas. Having this data helps make a stronger case when lobbying for action to control litter, from initiatives as simple as more public trash cans to local plastic bag bans to an statewide improved bottle bill, and more.
We will meet at the South District Marketplace at 10 a.m. You’ll need a phone capable of taking photos and tagging them with location, and internet connection to upload them. We’ll have a brief intro, then spend some time picking up litter in the area, and then reconvene to tag and upload your photos.
