Book 77: Siddartha by Hermann Hesse

Details

Please note: I'm provisionally pencilling this in for Tuesday 7th May, as Monday 6th May is May Day, and I can't do the following Monday. Hope that's OK (please message/comment if not) - ruddy Bank Holidays, eh?

Nominated by Andre, our book for May is Siddartha by German author Hermann Hesse.

The blurb from Goodreads reads:

Herman Hesse's classic novel has delighted, inspired, and influenced generations of readers, writers, and thinkers. In this story of a wealthy Indian Brahmin who casts off a life of privilege to seek spiritual fulfilment. Hesse synthesizes disparate philosophies--Eastern religions, Jungian archetypes, Western individualism--into a unique vision of life as expressed through one man's search for true meaning.

We meet at 7pm, but if you need to show up a little later than that, don't worry - we don't tend to start book discussion at 7 on the dot.

We have a break midway through, and everyone is welcome to stay on afterwards for further chat.

The upstairs room has been booked at the Thomas Wolsey pub in Ipswich.

We use this this pub because:

  1. There's parking nearby in the Cromwell Square car park (there is a charge). Or it may be possible to park on the road
  2. The upstairs room has been booked just for us. (Club-friendly pub.)
  3. It's reasonably central. Map
  4. No loud music, so that we can chat and be heard
  5. It's also walking distance from several places to buy hot food

We tend to follow a pattern in that the person who suggested the book says a few things about it before we all chat about it.

Towards the end, we then chat about what we'd like to read next. We then use a random number generator to pick the next read.

We do cover a wide range of genres - so be prepared to read beyond your favourite stuff.

If you want to chat before showing up or would prefer to meet outside, you can message Beren on Meetup.
