What we're about

We are a group of hikers from Iredell County and surrounding counties who enjoy day hikes in the mountains of North Carolina and some locations in Virginia, Tennessee, and South Carolina. Although the club only does day hikes, some members of the club backpack on the AT and MST. Some members have hiked Kilimanjaro and several treks in Europe. During 2016, members participated in day-hikes that totaled 688 miles in 81 hikes (average hike length: 8.49 miles).

The Hikers of Iredell Club was founded in 2008 by Dee and Barbee Ham of Statesville NC. In May of that year, a club web site was created (see below for URL). We extended our online presence to Facebook and Meetup in 2014.

This club seeks to combine comradery, vistas, flora, and exercise. Hikes are usually moderate-to-strenuous but some are very challenging and some are easy. We may trek 6 miles, or as many as 14 miles to reach destinations that might be out of reach of beginner hikers. We often maintain a 2 mph pace to ensure we return home before dark. You may be tired on your first hike, but, with practice, you will be at the front of the group and stopping to smell the roses while you wait on the others to catch up.

We car-pool to the trailheads and share the gasoline expenses. We also have a club picnic in the Spring and a Christmas get-together at a local restaurant. The club pays for the picnic hamburgers and hot dogs and misc items. We also have Internet webpage expenses and Meetup site expenses. For such items and other club expenses, we must collect dues - $24 initiation and $10 yearly thereafter. However, we waive the dues for the first two hikes.

We look forward to seeing you on the trail!

New River Trail State Park, Virginia

Car pools meet at Newtowne Plaza parking lot (same plaza as JR's Cigars). Car pools share gasoline expenses upon return.

The hike will be 12-13 miles along the old trail rail. This will be the first time to this section of the trail so this hike can be considered an exploratory hike. This is also a bike path. According to The State Park trail map, 4.2 miles of this hike will be considered difficult (or strenuous). More than 70% of this section “is on a grade; experienced hikers only .....; there is a risk of overexertion or injury to those not conditioned.” The park charges $5.00 for parking for each park and must be payed in cash so be prepared. Carpooling is definitely encouraged.

Statesville Sunday Morning Stroll

Mac Anderson Park

This is an easy, slightly rolling walk. We meet at the park, and will start at 8, and stopping at about 9:15 to 9:30. Expect anywhere from 2 to 4 miles, depending on your preferred pace. If you'd like to go further, of course, that is an option!
