Materialists

Hi all,

I'm setting up our next meetup for this Sunday, August 24th at 3.15pm for the Materialists.

I'm generally not a big fan of rom coms but I'm prepared to make an exception for The Materialists as it looks quite interesting.

Lucy (Dakota Johnson) is a New York City matchmaker who pairs up potential mates based on criteria such as height, age, and, crucially, finances. Her philosophy is challenged by Harry (Pedro Pascal), a wealthy stranger she meets at a wedding, and the surprise return of her ex-boyfriend John (Chris Evans), a struggling actor.

Though she deals in matters of the heart, Lucy herself remains detached, her cynicism sharpened by a past of emotional disappointments and her determination to control her own financial and romantic fate.

The familiar beats of the rom com are reinvigorated by Celine Song’s (Past Lives, 2023) mastery of tone, and razor-sharp writing; reframing romantic love as a transaction between business interests, her script sidesteps sentimentality in favour of a grown-up, worldly-wise view of contemporary relationships where fiscal security is at least as desirable as physical attraction.

Screening is taking place in screen 3. plenty of tickets left as of Wednesday pm but I would recommend booking in advance.I'm in G6.
