Hi all,
With the recent theft in the Louvre it seems only fitting to have a heist movie for our next meetup.

With this in mind I’m scheduling The Mastermind for our next meetup for this Sunday November 2 at 12.45pm.

In 1970, Massachusetts, unemployed carpenter J.B. (Josh O’Connor) lives with his wife Terri (Alana Haim) and their two young sons. In an ill-conceived bid to turn around his ailing fortunes, J.B. plans to rob a local modern art gallery, and while he escapes with a cache of Arthur Dove paintings, events quickly conspire against him, and he is forced to go on the run.
Reichardt’s idiosyncratic approach to storytelling is a surprisingly good fit for this gorgeously autumnal, melancholic heist movie which swiftly dispenses with the crime to focus on its aftermath.
A character study of a man whose failure as a thief is matched by poor decision making in his private life, J.B. is redolent of the unconventional antiheroes that populated the New Hollywood of the ‘70s, an era towards which Reichardt’s elegiac film nods.
I’ll be in the foyer from 12.15pm with my usual black baseball hat.
Screening is taking place in Cinema 1. There are plenty of tickets left as of Wednesday afternoon but I would recommend booking in advance. I’m sitting in J10.
See you all there,
Martin
