Joe Root Memorial Céilí – Irish Social Dance Night in Portland

Join the community for a special evening of Irish music and dance at the monthly Third Friday Céilí, held at Waverly Heights Congregational Church. This month’s gathering honors the life and legacy of Joe Root, a beloved traditional Irish musician and longtime presence in Portland’s music and dance scene.

The Joe Root Memorial Céilí takes place from 7:00 to 10:00 pm, with a beginner-friendly lesson at 7:00 pm. Newcomers are encouraged to arrive early and jump in. No partner or experience is needed, and all are welcome.

Joe Root was a fixture in the local community, known for his steady musicianship and generous spirit. He played for countless dances over the years, helping keep Irish traditions alive in Portland. This evening is dedicated to celebrating his contributions and the joy he brought to so many.

The night features live music from the Two Rivers Céilí Band and calling by Maldon Meehan. All dances are taught, and the event uses non-gendered calling to make participation open and inclusive.

Admission is on a sliding scale of $5–$20, pay what you can.
