ISSA NOVA, the Northern Virginia chapter of the Information Systems Security Association, hosts monthly meetings featuring exciting speakers, networking, and dinner. Meetings are free to members, and qualify for CPE credits. Non-ISSA members are invited to attend a meeting or two, before deciding if they wish to become an ISSA member.
Our monthly speakers cover topics such as Privacy and Security, GDPR, Insider Threat, AI, DevSepOps, etc. Our speakers have included Dr. Ron Ross of NIST, and Vint Cerf, Father of the Internet, and many more. More information can be found on our website: NOVA-ISSA.org

Abstract: Chris will discuss his career progression to his current position as a tenured CISO at a major financial institution. He will go over how he leveraged his collegiate education here in the state of Virginia into opportunities, including his work at Verizon. At Verizon, he was one of the writers in the early days of their Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR). He will talk about his transition to being a CISO and will provide insights in his nearly decade long current term at Fannie Mae.
Chris will also reflect on innovation in not only the technology industry, but specially within cybersecurity. He will provide personal insights about the evolution of solutions he has experienced over the years and how he sees future innovation and where the market will go.
Finally, he will cover the topic of Artificial Intelligence and how it is affecting our industry.
About the Speaker: Chris Porter is the SVP and Chief Information Security Officer for Fannie Mae. He is responsible for maturing and innovating Fannie Mae’s defense and response capabilities including all aspects of cyber security–including emerging threats/risk mitigation, policy development, and protection of the firm’s data and systems assets. He is also responsible for first-line risk team (Integrated Risk Management) support for CIO and Enterprise Operations as well as communicating the importance of information security across the enterprise.
He has over 20 years of experience in IT and security industries. His background includes work as an economist, network and system administrator, information security consultant and researcher. In a previous role at Verizon, Porter was a lead analyst and author of Verizon’s Data Breach Investigations Report series. He was also the co-creator of the VERIS Framework (Vocabulary for Event Recording and Incident Sharing) which allows organizations to collect and report security incident metrics in a standard and repeatable manner.
He is a member of the Board of Directors at the FAIR Institute and the Safe Housing Alliance and a Board member of the Analysis and Resilience Center for System Risk (ARC). He is also a faculty member of the McIntire Business Institute at the University of Virginia.
Chris has a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Psychology from the University of Virginia and a Master’s degree in Management of Information Technology from the University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce. He has multiple recognitions over the years including CISO, Top 100 CISOs, Cyber Defense Magazine Top CISO, HotTropics.ht and Forcepoint, Global CISO 100 List as well as FAIR Institute, FAIR
