DataMesh in the world of Legacy

Details

We are back for the last event of the meetup before the summer vocation. We have waited so much but it's time now to open the discussion about the coolest topic in data management: data mesh! No better way to start so than having with us as speakers Enrico Piccinin and Alessandro Confetti of Thoughtworks teh company where this fascinating new paradigm was born.

ABSTRACT

Data Mesh is rapidly gaining traction as a modern way to unlock value from the vast data assets usually held by companies.
Often though, even when attacking the world of data with a Data Mesh approach, we have to face the legacy challenge: how to extract, make sense and exploit data which are held by 20-30 years old systems in a way that is effective, low risk and fit for a "real time" world?
In this talk Alessandro Confetti and Enrico Piccinin will talk about a data platform that ThoughtWorks has built and brought to production that allows to create Data Products out of legacy systems in a Data Mesh way.

Enrico Piccinin

I work as Principal at ThoughtWorks. This means that I try to explain to customers my point of view on why they should go for modern IT solutions, why technology is at the core of their business, what they should change to leverage its power.
But this means also that I am constantly exposed, through the work of our teams, to the internals of these new technologies and to the challenges they pose when we use them to solve real business problems.
After many years and many different experiences developing IT solutions, I still feel an intimate passion for this work and I sometimes find myself in front of an editor, typing on the keyboard for my pet projects.
For all of this I feel fortunate and I thank God.

Alessandro Confetti

I started writing software when I was fourteen, and I have never stopped since then. In the meantime, I studied philosophy, focusing mainly on logic and language.
I have been working with data and metadata for more than 20 years, mainly in healthcare. After joining ThoughtWorks in 2017, as a Tech Principal, I'm now focusing on helping large organizations across several markets to make sense of their legacy software and data.
I've always been interested in human-computer interactions and how we can leverage technology and information for the good of all.
Since 2019, I teach service design as an adjunct professor at the Politecnico of Milan.
When not consulting or teaching, I'm passionate about speaking at international conferences about the decentralized web.
