We especially design it for students, PhD candidates, academic researchers, and industry professionals with a research focus in machine learning. **Abstract**: Training large language models at scale introduces a cascade of systems bottlenecks absent at smaller scales: from communication overhead and memory fragmentation to subtle numerical instabilities that surface only across thousands of devices. This talk covers the practical design choices behind scaling LLM training to thousands of GPUs: what parallelism strategies work (and when they break), how to keep training runs efficient and stable, and the engineering trade-offs that shape modern pretraining infrastructure. The presentation aims to be accessible to a broad ML audience, drawing on real-world experience from large-scale open-source training runs at Hugging Face. **Bio**: Nouamane Tazi is a Machine Learning Research Engineer at Hugging Face, specializing in training and scaling large language models. He is a co-author of SmolLM3 and The Ultra Scale Playbook, and his research spans NLP, deep learning, and scalable AI infrastructure. We'll start off the session with a run in Gleisdreieck park that might include scaling some walls, visiting a few sites in the area to explore their opportunities for climbing and balancing, or going up or down stairs in unusual ways. After the outdoors bit, we come back to our gym where we focus on building strength, working as a group, and learning basic martial arts techniques. We are a small, accessible, mixed-gender, queer-friendly group open to anyone, without any prior knowledge or specific degree of fitness required. Our martial art is Jutaijutsu, a traditional Japanese one focused on self-defence. Sounds interesting? We'd love for you to drop by and join us. You'll need running shoes and comfortable workout clothes, including a raincoat or the like for the park if the weather is bad. Once indoors, we train barefoot. ### This voice meditation workshop is an invitation to enter darkness together. Not to escape, but to listen, feel, and stay with what is usually avoided. We will work with voice and singing as tools for exploring grief in its different forms: grief after losing someone to death, after the end of a relationship, or after the loss of hope, future, or meaning. Not as a therapeutic intervention, but as a shared artistic and somatic experience. The workshop will be based on Eastern European folk songs about loss, mourning, and death that carry collective memory and emotional structure that allow us to access grief without explanation or narrative. In the second part, we will move into a guided voice meditation circle in complete darkness. Through sustained tones, breath, and gentle vocalization, we will create a shared sound environment that supports relaxation, stimulates the vagus nerve, and helps regulate the nervous system. The darkness allows attention to shift inward and reduces the pressure of being seen or performing. Wir treffen uns auf Discord, um gemeinsam zu nähen, zu plaudern und uns gegenseitig zu helfen. Egal ob Anfängerin, Anfänger oder schon fortgeschritten: Alle sind willkommen. Bring einfach dein aktuelles Projekt mit, stelle Fragen oder teile deine Tipps mit der Runde. **Deinen Arbeitsplatz zeigen – optional** Wenn du möchtest, kannst du deinen Arbeitsplatz live zeigen, zum Beispiel über: * Kamera auf Discord (Webcam oder Handy) * Bildschirmfreigabe für Schnittmuster oder Anleitungen am PC * Handy als Kamera von oben auf deinen Tisch **Ablauf des Abends** Ganz locker und ohne festes Ende: * **20:00 Uhr** – Ankommen und kurzer Technik-Check (Ton, Bild, Bildschirmfreigabe) * Kurze Vorstellungsrunde: Woran arbeitest du gerade? Wo brauchst du vielleicht Hilfe? * Danach freies Nähen, Austausch und Fragen zwischendurch * Offenes Ende – wenn du müde wirst, kannst du einfach gehen **Wichtig** Wir starten pünktlich um **20:00 Uhr**. Wer später dazukommt, ist natürlich trotzdem willkommen.
